Corpus Operations
The Smoot Biblical Corpus is a digital research archive dedicated to preserving, organizing, and making searchable the manuscript tradition of the Greek New Testament. Through structured metadata, witness-by-witness indexing, open-source technologies, and AI-assisted research tools, the archive transforms a fragmentary, scattered manuscript record into an accessible, queryable resource.
Our mission is simple: the textual evidence should be accessible to everyone, not just specialists.
Most Bible apps print a single reconstructed line and bury two thousand years of disagreement in a footnote. We do the opposite. The archive treats each manuscript as a witness in its own right — recording what it actually attests, where it is damaged, and where later scribes corrected it. The goal is not to settle doctrine, but to make the primary evidence easy to discover, read, and compare.
Every reading is anchored to a dated witness, and every gap is named rather than silently smoothed over. AI assists discovery and explanation, but the archive is ultimately grounded in the manuscripts themselves.
The Smoot Biblical Corpus is free to access — no paywalls, no subscriptions, no gatekeepers. Your support keeps it running, growing, and in the public's hands.
